A Guide To Cleaning Your Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans quietly work year-round to keep your home comfortable, but over time dust build up on the blades, motor housing, and even the light. A quick clean not only keeps your fan looking fresh, but also helps it run more efficiently. Here's a simple guide to get your fan sparkling again
How Often Should You Clean Your Ceiling Fan?
A quick dust every 1-2 weeks and a deeper clean every 1-2 months is ideal, especially in summer when your fan sees more use.
What You'll Need:
- A step stool or ladder
- Microfibre cloths
- An old pillow case
- A screwdriver (only if removing the light cover)
Step 1: Turn off your ceiling fan
Safety first! Make sure to switch your ceiling fan off via remote or wall switch before you start cleaning.

Step 2: Dust the blades with a pillow case
This is the game-changer.
- Slip an old pillow case over a single blade.
- Then gently pull the pillow case along the blade, from the base of the blades to the tip.
- Repeat this for every blade.
This way, the excess dust collects inside the pillow case, preventing dust from falling on you and your floor.

Step 3: Wipe down each blade
Use a microfibre cloth and wipe each blade from motor outward.
Make sure to not press too hard, extra pressure can warp or loosen the blade brackets.

Step 4: Clean the motor housing
Use a dry microfibre cloth or a long-reach duster to gently clean around the top and base of the motor housing.
Step 5: Refresh the light (if your fan has one)
-
Remove the light cover (held by 2-3 screws or a twist-lock).
- Use a dry cloth to wipe the light fitting and LED panel (no liquids on electrical parts)
Step 6: Check for loose screws
While you're up there, quickly check the screws on the blades and motor housing. Tighten gently if needed to help prevent wobbling or rattling.
Step 7: Clean up and turn your fan back on
- Shake the dust out of the pillow case (ideally outside) and give your cloths a rinse.
- Turn your fan back on - you'll notice smoother airflow and a cleaner look instantly
A clean ceiling fan doesn't just look better, it works better too. With just a few simple tools and a few minutes, you can keep your fan running efficiently and dust-free all year round.
